JNFL announced that in accordance with the Law for Regulation of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors, it today filed an application with the Director General of the Science and Technology Agency for permission to handle nuclear fuel material at the Rokkasho Uranium Enrichment Plant, Enrichment and Disposal Office Centrifuge Test Facility.

The facility, which will be established at the site of the Uranium Enrichment Plant, will conduct uranium enrichment technology research, including the development of centrifuges.

1. Purpose
The purpose of the test facility is the research and development of uranium enrichment technologies, including improved centrifuge performance and the development of materials used in centrifuges and other equipment.

2. Location
The facility will be located within the Enrichment and Disposal Office at the Rokkasho Uranium Enrichment Plant.

3. Administration
A new division, called the Research and Development Division, will be created within the Uranium Enrichment Plant administration. The new division will be responsible for management and operation of the Enrichment and Disposal Office Centrifuge Test Facility.

4. Construction Schedule
Construction will begin in FY1998, and is scheduled for completion during FY2000.
